Today our focus is shifting towards Spain. Some know our guest for being the mind behind the label PIRANHA, but we’ve chosen him becuase of his style that promotes the coexistence of hard and emotional elements within the same sound. Melodies are a must for him and being able to include them in a hammering mix allows you listeners to go through different feelings. You will surely notice this during the 46th set of the ECLYPSE INVITES Podcast series. Welcome JAWS!
ECLYPSE: What is your name, age, and where are you from?
My name is JAWS, I’m 24 years old and I’m Colombian although I’m currently based in Madrid
ECLYPSE: Why JAWS?
I was going through that typical period when you have a name but you’re not quite comfortable with it and you keep looking for a good one….
Then in 2018 I attended my first Fabrik event, it was an Exhale showcase and a guy I had just met while listening to 999999999 gave me a pill. After a while my jaw started to dance and that is when the idea crossed my mind: I wanted the people who listen to my music to react in the same was as my jaw, so I chose the name ‘’JAWS APART’’. Eventually, I thought it was too long and everyone called me JAWS anyway so I kept the shortened version
ECLYPSE: What inspired you to produce and DJ and when did you start?
I was inspired by watching the 2012 Tomorrowland aftermovie, the one in the book. I wanted to be that person who made everyone dance and jump on the dancefloor.
After that, when I was 15 I bought my first controller and played in my room for a long time until I got my first gig in a private farm in Colombia at the age of 18
ECLYPSE: What do you want to express with your music?
What I aim to convey is a journey between heaven and hell, light and darkness, in the duality of the mind.
One does not exist without the other and we must embrace both if we want to be happy.
Illusion, nostalgia, suffering, love and chaos in a dystopian world
ECLYPSE: Who are the producers and DJs you are looking the most up to?
The producers I look up to the most are HASHTAGA, PLEXØS, FLUCC, KAHAN, NIKI ISTREFI. While my top DJs are DAX J and RIKTHER
ECLYPSE: Tell us about Piranha, how was it born and what does it represent for you?
Piranha was born from the lack of a sound like this in my city Madrid. There were already powerhouses like Underhell and Legion that had been representing industrial techno for years, but we needed something for the people who craved higher BPMs and an alternative to what was already there at that time.
It was also born out of the need to create something more than just a massive party where people buy tickets, dance for a couple of hours to some djs and then go home. It’s a community where we all know each other and whoever comes in new becomes part of us, all united for the same reason.
It was born in villas and illegal warehouses on the outskirts of the city, where people danced until the last one standing was left. Eventually, it moved to the centre because of how difficult it is to get people to move outside, but it lost its essence there and that’s one of the reasons why we won’t be doing any more events in Madrid.
It represents unity and the message that to conquer the world you have to act like piranhas, all together towards the same prey
ECLYPSE: What are your expectations for 2025?
A gig with one of my favourite industrial labels, I can’t say anything yet but you’ll see soon!
I plan on putting a lot of my energies in production, both for remixes and my own creations and I also hope to release my first solo EP.
I’d love to have Piranha showcases outside Spain, unfortunately here the scene is rotten and you have to go out where they really value your work
ECLYPSE: Do you think Techno as a genre has evolved in the past years?
Yes, all things in life, including music genres, ends up evolving. I have to say, though, that this evolution led many to make the mistake of considering everything ‘’techno’’. This happens because it gets mixed various external elements that, despite appearing clubs, do not belong to our genre.
On a positive note, the ‘’pure’’ techno is still alive, there are still many artists and many clubs that remain faithful to its essence and have not sold out to the new EDM.
ECLYPSE: How is your local DJ scene?
As I said above, it’s not doing well. There is a lot of selfishness, a lot of ego, few producers and many DJs who are not there for the love of music or out of passion, but to be in the spotlight chasing likes.
There is little essence, only a few try to do something different and most of them follow a mold. During the years I’ve spent here in Madrid I’ve only tried to unite people and failed as everyone wants to do things by themselves and take all the credit.
Anyway, I do not give up and keep trying, in the end it is the city where I live and somehow I will leave my mark.
Thank you so much for accepting ECLYPSE’s invite, we are looking forward to promoting your music in the future on our label, we are honored to have you here!
